Martin Dostál
was born on February 19, 1962 in Prague. He graduated from Prague’s Academy of Fine Arts, having taken a production course at the school’s television faculty between 1984 and 1988. Between 1990 and 1995, he studied art history at the Philosophical Faculty of Charles University in Prague. With the exception of the period when he headed the East Bohemian Gallery in Pardubice (2004–2006), he’s worked as a freelance curator and director. Between 2000 and 2005, he was an external teacher at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University in Liberec. He lives and works in Prague. Since the beginning of his professional career as a critic and curator, he has focused on issues related to contemporary art. He is also the author and director of documentary films and TV programmes for Czech Television and other producers. Thanks to his dual role, he is also interested in films about art and artists. His most significant works include the coauthorship of the screenplay for the film The Ride (along withJan Svěrák, 1994). As co-director with Jan Svěrák, he made the documentary film Daddy (2004). He curated many group and individual exhibitions of artists across generations. He specializes in painting projects and is close to the authors of the 1980s (Jiří David) but also works with members of the oldest (Stanislav Kolíbal, Theodor Pištěk) and youngest (the Obr group) generations. He has authored many catalogues and monographs (Jiří David, Stanislav Diviš, Michal Gabriel, Antonín Střížek, Karel Štědrý and others) and collaborates mainly with the KANT publishers in Prague.
