Jiří David
Jiří David (1956) is a conceptual artist. He became publicly known as member of the Tvrdohlaví artistic group (The Stubborn, 1987-1991) which was the first to disrupt the border between he official and unofficial art worlds at the time of the late, “Perestroyka” communism. He became a leading personality of post-modern discourse in Czech visual art. In the mid-1990s, Jiří David took on pedagogical duties, first at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague (1995–2002) and after a twoyear break at the Academy of Arts, Design and rchitecture where he has since led the Intermedia Confrontation Studio. His work is an irritating mix of styles and gestures. His need for exhibitionism, provocation and social commitment is balanced with introspective sets which submit Jiří David’s unstable personality to scrutiny. The diversity of the media and their use is a natural component of his focus on the contextual, communicational and confrontational dimensions of art. His installations in public spaces are an important aspekt of his activities (Flare, 2001; Heart at the Castle, 2002; The Key Statue, 2010, etc.) In 2009, he presented his work at the Preliminary Retrospective exhibition by City Gallery Prague, hosted the Municipal Library. David’s last exhibition before the Mikulov symposium was Scream of the Baboons at the Colloredo-Mansfeld Palace, also by City Gallery Prague. He first attended the symposium in 2007; he served as the curator the following year.
