Jiří Votruba
was born on December 8, 1946 in Prague. In 1970, he graduated from the Faculty of Architecture of the Czech Technical University in Prague where he lives and works. He is a painter, illustrator and designer. Jiří Votruba is an interesting artist on the Czech scene who in his paintings and cut-outs successfully remixes the strategies of US painting after WWII which he spices up with visual experiences from Japan and from graphic design. In his latest work, he focuses on traditional portrait painting, comics and abstract drippings with a subtle assemblage thrash mix and, increasingly, on cut-out templates which he installs on walls.
