Milan Kunc
was born on November 27, 1944 in Prague. Between 1964 and 1967, he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague at the studio of Karel Souček but was expelled in the eight semester due to an alleged lack of talent. In 1969, he left for Germany where he studied at the Staatlichen Kunstakademie in Düsseldorf at the studios of Joseph Beuys and Gerhard Richter. In 1979, he along with Jan Knap and Peter Angermann founded the group NORMAL which was active until 1981. He has lived and worked in Cologne, Rome, Tuscany, New York and East Hampton. Between 1996 and 1997, he worked on ceramic sculptures in The Hague. Between 1998 and 2000, he lived and worked Schlosstal, Germany; he lived between Prague and Cologne between 2001 and 2006 and since that time has been based in Prague. Milan Kunc is internationally renowned Czech-German painter. In the late 1970s, he created the so-called ost-pop, his own take on popart. When the NORMAL group was founded in Düsseldorf in 1979, its activities meant a substantial contribution to the upcoming wave of postmodern painting in Germany. Kunc’ work is characterized by loose imagination, a belief in the power of the traditional paining and his ability to absorb various influences from the history of the genre. His work heads towards classicizing synthesis and is characterized by an exceptional sense of composition and a refined feel for colours. He also works with plastic art that is characterized by the same qualities as his paintings.
